Published by Vortex Comics in May, 1991
After a lifetime of enjoying NASCAR racing collectibles I have to say my most prized collectibles are these comic books about NASCAR, The Daytona 500 story and many of the drivers. One of the comic books that most interested me immediately was the Daytona 500 Story. It was published in May of 1991. It is a fun and interesting review of the history of the Daytona 500 race. Although it is very basic it is obvious it served as an introduction to the Daytona 500 timeline for people who were getting into NASCAR racing in the early 90’s but did not know much about the 500 other than it was the first race of the year and it was a big deal and still is today.

A Unique Vintage Comic Book
The Daytona 500 story comic book is a very unique comic book, a short 28-pages about how the Daytona 500 race began and highlights some of the races through the years. It shows some past winners like Lee Petty, Richard Petty, the Cale Yarborough and Donnie Allison fight, Bill Elliott and the 1990 race when Dale Earnhardt was leading the race and blew a tire on the final lap. Just one of many times Dale was looking like taking the win in the Daytona 500 and something would happen to prevent it.

Kids Love Comic Books
It’s no secret that comic books are made for kids, some big kids too. The Daytona 500 Story is no exception. Meant to get the youngsters interested in NASCAR racing if they weren’t already. In the early 1990’s NASCAR racing was blasting upward in popularity and growing in the number of fans exponentially. Some would say the good old days of racing.
Find The Daytona 500 Story Comic Book Online
After conducting many searches online for the Daytona 500 Story comic book I find that not very many are on the market for sale. The most being available on eBay from individuals, one here and two there. Some sellers would have 3 or 4 copies but not many. Etsy.com would be another good source to find mostly one copy, surprisingly like 95% of issues found online would be in great vintage condition. A handful of independent comic book dealers online would mostly be sold out. However once in awhile you would be able to find one for a good price.
The Price of the Comic Book
In May of 1991 when the comic was issued it carried a price of $2 per copy. At the time of writing this article in early 2020, many copies are listed for as low as $6 to $12 depending on the condition and wear and tear. We have also found some for the hefty price tag of $24 per copy. Here at Daytona500Winners.com we try to have only the best condition available. Many from our collection come from many collectors that purchased many copies at the time of release and have had them in their NASCAR racing collectibles collection ever since. Our price is a great value for such a unique vintage comic book in close to mint condition.
The Daytona 500 Story Comic Book Review
What is the Daytona 500? Who won the first one? Why is it such a popular race? Why is it so well known, even among people that don’t regularly watch NASCAR racing? How do teams even prepare for this race and why are there only 43 cars that participate in the race?
The Daytona 500 story comic book, first published in May of 1991 by Vortex Comics answers these questions and more about the most famous stock car race in existence. The comic book itself does a magnificent job breaking down the Daytona 500 in a way that all audiences can understand. Readers do not have to have any knowledge about stock car racing in general or this race in particular to be able to read, understand and enjoy this comic book, although people who have intimate knowledge of the race itself and/or stock car racing may find this comic to be extremely entertaining.
The artwork in the comic book itself is solid and serves its purpose – to educate people about the most popular stock car race. There are frames that are gorgeously colored and drawn. There are comic books out there that have better artwork and there are many, many comics out there that have much worse artwork. In general, though, the frames are fun to look at and are informational.
This is a vintage comic book that is no longer being printed and would be a wonderful addition to a collection for the comic book lover in your life or would be a welcome educational tool for the person in your life who would like to learn more about the roots of the Daytona 500 race.
What’s The Value of The Comic Book
When you are buying or selling comic books, or any vintage collectible, it’s imparitive that both parties reach an agreement on the said collectibles condition or grade, as this will help to a great extent determine its value. Sometimes this can be a difficult disition to agree on, as it’s in a seller’s best interest to grade high and the buyers to grade lower. In conclution the better the condition the higher the value.
What WIKIPEDIA Says About The Daytona 500 story comic
“Reflecting publisher Marks’ interest in car racing, Vortex survived until 1994 with an odd mixture of alternative titles and NASCAR-themed comics. (In 1991 and 1992 Vortex sponsored the ‘Rookie of the Year’ award in NASCAR’s Grand National series; the 1991 prize was won by future superstar Jeff Gordon.)” If you would like to read the complete page from Wikipedia click here> The Daytona 500 Story Comic Book – Vortex Comics
