Biography: Bill Elliott

Bill Elliott, born William Clyde Elliott as the youngest of three boys in 1955, is a retired NASCAR driver. His career spanned over 37 years, and it held him in high ranks throughout. He has a successful record of breaking speed barriers and series wins, including two Daytona 500 victories in 1985 and 1987, and three times at the Southern 500 at Darlington.

He won the 1988 Winston Cup Championship, as well as 44 wins in the series. His greatest accomplishment was winning the NASCAR premier series championship in 1988 with 6 wins, 15 top-five finishes, and 22 top-ten finishes. It was also obvious that his fans adored him, as he also won NASCAR’s Most Popular Driver Award sixteen times, a record that has yet to be broken.

His record for fastest qualifying speed at Talladega, reaching 212.809 mph in 1987, has also been marked as the fastest speed at any NASCAR race. He became known as ‘Million Dollar Bill’ when he won a million dollar bonus for winning three of four marquee events. He was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 2007, and he was recently inducted into the 2015 class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
