Ward Burton – 2002 Daytona 500 winner
February 17, 2002 the 44th running of “The Great American Race”
Safer racing this year. In the shadow of the death of the great Dale Earnhardt we start the 2002 Daytona 500 but he gave us something else from now on, safer racing, the HANS devise, the safer barriers and much more. Last years winner Michael Waltrip wasted no time getting in the lead with Dale Jr. in second. Tony Stewart blew a motor on the second lap and the first caution of the day was for a blown right front tire on Dale Jr.’s car. 2002 Daytona 500 winner…

The big one came on lap 138, Jeff Gordon and Kevin Harvick made contact going in to turn one. 18 cars were taken out, nearly half the field restarted the race. Jeff Gordon took the lead and it looked like a strong race for Gordon. With just 10 laps to go Robby Gordon hits the wall to bring out the last caution of the race. On the restart a mess began before they even got up to speed, race cars going everywhere. While cleaning up the track from that one NASCAR brought out the red flag. 2002 Daytona 500 winner…
This is when Sterling Marlin couldn’t resist getting out of his car and assessing the damage to his right front fender. An official jumped out of the pace car to see what Sterling had in mind when Sterling started pulling on his fender to get it away from the tire. One of the announcers saying he cant do that… and at the restart Sterling Marlin started in the back of the pack. 3 laps to go Ward Burton in the lead and stayed there to become the 2002 Dayton 500 winner.
I am proud to bring you this site, after many years of wondering who won the Daytona 500 in a certain year or how many times did Richard Petty win? I thought I couldn’t possibly be the only one that has a need for a site like this. So I made it. If you found this site useful, please link to us or mention us on your racing related web site or social media. Thank you very much.
