February 20, 2005 the 47th running of “The Great American Race”

The 47th running of the Daytona 500 would be Rusty Wallace’s 23 and final chance to win the great American race.  He would finish 10th.  Dale Earnhardt Jr. was last years champion and a favorite to win this year.  He would finish 3rd.  14 laps in Bobby Labonte’s engine blew, it would be the first of 11 cautions today.  The 2005 Daytona 500 winner is Jeff Gordon.

Late in the race with Tony Stewart leading Jeff Gordon takes a chance and goes to the high side for the lead and he gets shuffled around while Jr. jumps out to pass Tony with 5 laps to go.  The crowd is on their feet.  Two and three wide racing back and forth, up and down.  A exciting last 5 laps.  2 laps to go and Jeff Gordon slips by Jr. just before the yellow comes out for Kasey Kahne getting in the wall.  A green white checkered finish, lots of scrambling behind Gordon, Jr, and Kurt Busch.  The 2005 Daytona 500 winner is Jeff Gordon for the third time.

I am proud to bring you this site, after many years of wondering who won the Daytona 500 in a certain year or how many times did Richard Petty win?  I thought I couldn’t possibly be the only one that has a need for a site like this.  So I made it.  If you found this site useful, please link to us or mention us on your racing related web site or social media.  Thank you very much.
