February 20, 2000 the 42nd running of “The Great American Race”

Pole sitter Dale Jarrett had a qualifying lap speed of 191.091 Ricky Rudd started to his outside. For the first time Dale Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt Jr. are in the Daytona 500 together.  The first of 6 cautions was due to Jeff Gordon’s broken oil line fitting.  His crew got it fixed but he finished 5 laps down.  By lap 40 the top 3 spots were all Fords.  Dale Jarrett, Mark Martin and Rusty Wallace.  (The 2000 Daytona 500 winner – Dale Jarrett)

With 13 laps to go Johnny Benson was leading, with 10 laps to go Johnny still leading, with 4 laps to go Dale Jarrett makes his move and here comes the fright train.  Jarrett, Burton, Elliott, Wallace and Mark Martin all went by.  Johnny Benson finished 12th.  2 laps to go Jimmy Spencer hits the wall and brings out the yellow flag, Dale Jarrett wins the Daytona 500 of the year 2000.  The Fords were strong this year in the 500 and Jarrett’s was the strongest…

With this Daytona 500 win Dale Jarrett joined Bobby Allison, Cale Yarborough and Richard Petty as one of the select few that had won the Dayton 500 more than twice.  This would be Dale’s third victory in the great American race.  Dale Jarrett the 2000 Daytona 500 winner…
