Pole sitter Dale Jarrett had a qualifying lap speed of 191.091 Ricky Rudd started to his outside. For the first time Dale Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt Jr. are in the Daytona 500 together. The first of 6 cautions was due to Jeff Gordon’s broken oil line fitting. His crew got it fixed but he finished 5 laps down. By lap 40 the top 3 spots were all Fords. With 13 laps to go Johnny Benson was leading, with 10 laps to go Johnny still leading, with 4 laps to go Dale Jarrett makes his move and here comes the fright train. Jarrett, Burton, Elliott, Wallace and Mark Martin all went by.
